Falconry Demonstration

Did you know that only 25% of juvenile red-tailed hawks make it to their second year? Join us on Sunday, March 16, at 12:30 PM for a captivating falconry demonstration and discussion with Major Mike Josephson, USAF. Member Laurel Milos met Mike last summer when he spotted some juvenile red-tails here in Keswick, which it turns out is an ideal habitat for raptors!

Mike’s next duty station, starting in June, will be the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, where he’ll be instructing falconry. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to benefit from his unique knowledge and skill before he leaves Virginia. Mike also launched a non-profit in Stafford that captures young red-tailed hawks, trains them to hunt, provides veterinary care if needed, and then releases them back into the wild, better prepared to survive to breeding adulthood.

The demonstration will take place in the field between Foxden and Overhill. We recommend wearing boots or other sturdy footwear and long pants, as there will be a short walk of a few hundred yards from the parking areas along a well-mown path. We have limited parking space for 20-25 cars between Foxden and Overhill, so please RSVP so we can arrange parking (and carpools would be wonderful if convenient).
